You know how growing up you have holiday traditions that your family does, and you kind of assume that those same traditions are just what everyone does? Like “oh, this is what’s normal. Everyone does this.” Maybe it was just me who naively thought like that, but once Daniel and I got married, I realized that everyone’s family has different traditions and backgrounds, and I was excited to get to create our own as a couple.
That being said, Daniel and I are coming up on our fourth married Christmas together, and over the years it’s been really fun to explore and develop our own holiday traditions as a little family. For example: we love Black Friday (Okay, maybe I’m speaking more for myself than for Daniel in this instance 😉 ). Every year we get up early, grab some coffee for fuel, and go shopping together – usually all day. Oops! Our last stop is usually Target, where we’ll separate, shop for stocking stuffers for each other, and then meet up at the end to buy new ornaments and Christmas decorations for that year. And the day always ends with us buying our (real, never fake!) Christmas tree, and bringing it home to decorate.
While I love all of our traditions that we’ve developed over the years, one of my favorites that I’ve come to cherish is buying each other a new set of his + her Christmas pajamas. Even Coussie has his own pair of Christmas jams! There’s something so inherently cozy about the holidays, which almost makes new PJs feel like a necessity (especially if you’re homebodies like we are). The weather gets colder, the days get shorter, and it makes you want to stay at home burrowed in some cozy pajamas with a warm cup of goodness. Anyone else with me on this? Besides, at least half of Christmas day is devoted to wearing pajamas while you open gifts and enjoy the morning anyway…at least in our household! Why not get some special ones for the occasion? 🙂
In the past we’ve ended up getting some pretty bizarre Christmas onesies and gag PJs (here’s looking at you, Daniel’s Santa jumpsuit), but this year we decided to keep it a little more festive and stick with a classic Christmas aesthetic. I mean, how can you go wrong with plaid at Christmas? I also like how we’re kind of coordinating with the different colors of plaid, but still different. 🙂 Maybe next year we’ll have to go all out and get matching onesies since we played this year so safe…but don’t hold me to it! I don’t know that I’m ready to return to the year of Daniel’s ugly Santa onesie just yet…

All I know is, with each year that passes, I’m thankful to have someone to share in the making of new traditions with, and I can’t wait to continue to create more as the years go by. After all, the best things about traditions aren’t the rituals themselves, but the people you share them with. I hope that this holiday season you’re inspired to create some new traditions and enjoy little moments with your loved ones, even if it’s something as simple and buying some new Christmas PJs together. 😉
